Full-time Horticultural Grower needed, Chagfood CSA, Devon

Salary £10,000 - £12,000/pa commensurate with experience

 

Chagfood Community Market Garden is recruiting an experienced grower to join our market gardening team from March 2014. Candidates should have at least two-season’s experience and a flexible and dedicated approach to farming. In return applicants can expect to develop practical skills for managing a successful community supported farm enterprise as well as experience of using working horses in market gardening.

 

Chagfood is a community supported market garden supplying ecologically-produced seasonal vegetable shares on the north-east edge of Dartmoor. Chagfood was founded in 2010 and has since grown to supply 70 shares a week. In 2012 Chagfood took more land and is now aiming to supply 100 shares from five acres of organic certified ground. Chagfood is a grower-led CSA scheme with a committed volunteer membership. Chagfood uses a combination of hand, horse and occasional tractor power for cultivating and weeding our crops.

 

Candidates should be available to travel to Devon for interview during the week of the 13th January 2014 and should be able to start full-time work from early March 2014. Candidates should be prepared to relocate to mid-Devon. We can offer help in finding local accommodation.

 

Responsibilities will include:

× Day to day growing tasks across a 5-acre market garden; crop planning, sowings, cultivation, transplanting, weeding and harvesting

× Managing and directing volunteers

× Writing newsletters and updating website

× Business management including marketing, outreach and promotional events

 

Essential attributes:

× At least two years practical experience in a horticultural enterprise

× Ability to work well as part of a team

× Ability to use initiative and occasionally work alone

× A commitment to organic horticultural management

 

Desireable attributes:

× An interest in local food resilience and community supported farming

× Experience of managing volunteers in a community food growing enterprise

× Full UK driving licence and own vehicle
