Seasonal Grower Apprentice/Long-term WWOOFer

There is currently an opportunity to gain buckets of hands-on experience and learn shed loads throughout a whole growing season - all in a beautiful location. You would be living within an intentional community who run a Community Farm and are lovely WWOOF UK hosts too!

Here are the details of the position:

"Bosavern Community Farm is a thriving and expanding community farm situated on the Lands End Peninsula just outside the small but busy town of St Just. We are very fortunate to be one of the few community farms in the country that own the land they work on and we are now heading into our 6th year. We have 33.5 acres of land which comprise 2 fenced fields in which we rotate our flock of 350 free range laying hens, a 2 acre market garden with 6 polytunnels including a propagation tunnel, a 12m² fruit cage, 5 bee hives, 3 rare breed pigs (arriving May 2016) and field-scale main-crop potatoes, brassicas, onions and leeks. Everything is grown to Wholesome Food Association principles so we never use any pesticides or other chemicals. There is also a newly planted community woodland, with the rest of the land being grazed by a local organic cattle farmer or cut for hay/silage. Our business is primarily divided into 4 streams: veg boxes (currently approx. 30 per week); wholesale to local pubs and restaurants; a weekly farmers market; and our increasingly popular farm shop. We also host some campers in the summer.
We were recently awarded the prestigious Cornwall Sustainability Award in the category of ‘Best contribution to a sustainable food economy: From nature to plate’. We are looking for an energetic & enthusiastic person to take on an informal traineeship with us for the whole of this growing season (April – end September).
You will work alongside our 2 main growers, assisting them in the day to day running of the farm. You will receive practical training in how to run a working community farm including elements of propagation, planting, weed control, crop planning, cultivation, harvesting, quality control, marketing and also distributing produce. We will provide the successful candidate with their own room in the farmhouse, with all food provided and household bills covered.

The position will be full time with 2 consecutive days off per week, the working hours will be approx. 7hrs per day. Some flexibility may be required during busier times of the season. We would love to hear from people with an enthusiasm for horticulture and who believe in growing in an environmentally sensitive way. We are looking for someone who is a hard worker but easy going and can work as part of a team whilst
also being capable of taking on individual tasks. You will be living with other people in a shared farmhouse, so someone who is happy with this is essential. It would be good if the candidate had a full clean UK driving license to potentially cover our delivery driver, but this is not essential."

***This position is still available for an immediate start.***
